We had a great time in Maui last week. The weather was perfect and the resort was very nice. We mostly just relaxed by reading, working on our tans and eating a lot of good food. Wish we were still there.

Fender Bender

Just sitting at a stop light on Rosedale Highway near the office when some young guy in a oilfield truck slammed into the back of me. I was then pushed into the car in front of me. Lucky I was hurt very bad, sore back and hips, feeling better each day. Lucky Shelly wasn't with me. The Sequoia is a different story, $5000.00 worth of damage. In the repair shop now getting fixed.

Church Camps

Shelly and I have gone several camps over the past several weeks. First Shelly went to Young Women's camp at Big Meadow in the high Sierra's. It is a true camping experience in tents and living outdoors. The Girls have a very spiritual time and learn many important things. Shelly is still the Young Women's President in Ward and is enjoying it very much. She spent all week at Camp and then I came up on Friday night to visit the girls and give the "Bishop's talk". The next week I took the Young men to the Colorado River to canoe. We paddled about 40 miles and had a good time. We talked about what kind of men they should become. The weather was very hot, but we stayed cool in the water. It has been a happy couple of weeks for us.

Shelly woke up to find this on our front lawn on her Birthday. There is a lady in our ward that decorates lawns on specical Birthdays. Needless to say Shelly was very embrassed and had to get it cleaned up ASAP.

Nate, Stacie and the grandkids came to visit us in California. We had a really good time with them. Bella and Sophie are so much fun. We just played and swam in our backyard for several days. Bella liked hunting the frogs we get in backyard after the sun goes down. We all traveled down to Huntington Beach on Father's Day. Erin fixed a great dinner for all of us. Erin and Warren cooked fish on Father's day for John, it was so very good. We played at the Beach, which both Bella and Sophie loved. We spend time enjoying the perfect So. Cal weather. Thanks Erin and Warren for being our hosts.

Smoky Mountains

In Tennesse we went to Gatlinburgh just outside the Smoky Mountains. It was a nice little town that is a much like Jackson Hole WY. Shops, Hotels and tourists are every where. We drove into the Park and climbed to the top of the third highest peak on the East Coast. The Forest was very green and beautiful, nothing like the forests out west.

We left Connecticut and traveled to Kentucky to see Nate's family. A road trip was our next adventure. We decided to drive to Tennesse and see some sights along the way. First stop was Boonesbourgh. We visited the restored Daniel Boone Fort near the Kentucky River.

We had a great trip to see Ben and Cynda. We spent the long weekend traveling and looking at the sights. We started off going to Mystic and the surrounding area. We stopped by Fort Griswold, the site of a battle during the revolutionary war. We climbed a tower to look over the old fort's breastworks. We drove to Newport Rhode Island to see the old mansions of the super rich. These mansions were built as the summer homes of the wealthy in the 1890's. The picture is of the Vanderbilt's summer home. It was amazing to see and tour these grand homes. Back to Mystic the next day. This is a very old seaport that supported a large ship building economy 150 years. On the way back to Cynda's house we stopped by for a combined railroad and steam paddle wheel boat ride up the Connecticut River. It was a beautiful scenic trip. Thanks Ben and Cynda for the great time. Made us want to live on the east coast.

Mother's Day

Shelly was so happy to have two of her daughters home for Mother's Day!!!! Cynda had spent most of last week visiting us from Connecticut. It has been nice to have her home. She scheduled this trip between jobs, she starts a new one tomorrow. Erin and Warren came up Saturday to spend time with Cynda and us. We had them all at Church and then a nice dinner. Family is great!!!!!!

Since we were driving by Disneyland from San Diego we decided to stop by for the afternoon and early evening. It is always fun to spend time there. One of the pictures is from on top of the Ferris wheel in California Adventure (Disney is adding a new "Land" in California Adventure).

We have been busy attending weddings for the young people in our Ward. Two weeks ago we at the LA Temple for a wedding. We were then in San Diego this past Friday for another wedding. It is a wonderful thing to watch these Young couples make good choices!!

We had a great time in Kentucky for Thanksgiving. Thanks Nate and Stacie for having us. It was so much fun having the whole family there. We went to the Christmas parade and it was really cold.

Monterey

We went to Monterey so that I could attend some education classes. It was a good conference and Shelly had fun hanging out and doing the spa treatment. The weather was a little chilly, but we still enjoyed the surroundings. The birds by the fisherman were amazing, they were huge in size and got so close to him.

Shelly went to visit Cynda in Connecticut and had a great time. They went to a "Time Out for Women" in Hartford. It was a lot of fun to hang out with Cynda for a few days. Young Women's Camp

Shelly spent a week with the young women of our ward at "Big Meadow" in the High Sierra's. She loved the week and grew close to the young women. There were many wonderful experiences that they shared. On Friday night I joined the group for a Fast and Testimony meeting. It is a beautiful place to visit and it has a special spirit about it.

Mt. Whitney

I had the opportunity to hike with the young men of my ward to the top of Mt. Whitney. Mt. Whitney is the highest peak in the lower 48 states, at 14,464 feet. We hiked for 7 days and covered 69 miles. It was a great experience for all of us. I was impressed with the young men. We held our Sunday Meeting in the wilderness and it was a amazing to feel the spirit there. I made it to the top, but I am pretty tired!!!!

Dad's Funeral

We lost our Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather on July 1, 2010. He was 87 years old and poor health. The family gathered in Richfield for the funeral. It was good to see the whole family, although it was a sad occasion that brought us together. He was a good, honest and hardworking man.

We spent a week relaxing and enjoying ourselves. It is always good to get away from the stresses in our lives. We ate, read, sat by the pool and not much else. The Fairmont Hotel was amazing; I put up a a picture of us in the lobby and one of the hotel grounds. Every mourning we walked along a path that followed the beach; a couple of pictures are of the views from this path. The food we ate was amazing, many very good dishes to try. Wish we where still there!!!!

Richfield Mother's Day

It was the first time in four years that all the brothers were together. It was great to see each other. Mom and Dad were delighted to have us all there. Cynda tagged along and it was fun to have her with us.

Nate's Dental School Graduation

Nate Graduated from The UNLV School of Dental Medicine in May. We are very proud of him and for this accomplishment. He spoke at the UNLV commencement held at the Thomas and Mack arena, as always he gave a thoughtful and inspiring address. We appreciate and love Stacie for her long standing support of Nate's education. They are now off to Kentucky for more school. We were so happy that Erin, Warren and Cynda all came to Las Vegas for the Graduation (not to mention that all were there for Shelly to celebrate Mother's day with her kids).

We had a great experience reliving what the Handcart pioneers went through with the youth of our Ward and Stake. We have a new appreciation for those Pioneers. Shelly's Great, Great Grandfather Hans Ole Magleby came across the plains pushing a handcart, and we are so grateful to him. Our Youth were great!!! I had to leave on Saturday for a special meeting with Elder Bednar for all the Stake President's and Bishops in the Central California area, I felt bad that I missed the last day. Elder Bednar was great!!!

Legas Vegas

We went to see Nate and family. It is always fun to see them. Soon they we be in Kentucky and we will miss them. A visit to the Mirage to see dolphins, lions and tigers was very exciting.

We went to see Cynda and Ben in Connecticut. We saw their apartment and what their lives were like. We then drove through New England to see the leaves change. We stayed in a B & B one night, went to New Hampshire, visited Concord and Lexington where the Revolutionary war started, Plymouth Rock. We then met up with Erin and Warren in NYC for two days. Great time, thanks Ben & Cynda for driving us around!!!!

Sequoia National Park

We had the grand kids come to Bakersfield (they did bring their parents - Nate and Stacie along). We went to Sequoia and did some sightseeing. It was a lot of fun. Many very large trees, the General Sherman tree is the largest living thing on the planet. There was a tree that had been hallowed out so much that we could walked through it, Bella and I are showing you how big it was. We saw a bear with her two cubs, they was very near the trail we were walking on. We climbed to the top of a large rocky dome that looked over the park. We stayed inside the park at a lodge where we saw deer and a assortment of other animals.

We were happy to see everyone and have them visit.

I had great time in Alaska. I went with Kelly (Shelly's brother), nephew Jensen, Stan and Kevin. We fished for Halibut, Salmon and many other types of fish. Alaska in so big, beautiful and amazing. We saw whales everyday and the scenery was out of this world.

Mayakoba Hotel - Maya Riveria

This was a very nice hotel and we enjoyed ourselves!!! We stayed on the hotel property and enjoyed the sun and water. Our only excersion was to dinner one evening to nearby Playa Del Carmen. Because of the recession and the swine flu scare we had the place almost all to ourselves. We had many of the pools all to ourselves for hours at a time. We could also walk on the beach and only see several other people. (This part of Mexico has not had any flu reported, the media scare has destroyed the economy here with thousands of local workers being let go, it is truly sad). There were also canals that lead to the ocean on the grounds that added to the beauty. We were sad to leave.

Ruins at Chichen Itza - Mexico

We were so excited to see these ruins, one of the "Seven Wonders of the World". It was truly a amazing and inspiring experience. We were there at 8 am and had the site all to ourselves for several hours. We hired Victor to be our personal tour guide, he told and showed us things that made the grounds come alive. all I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!

Mayaland Bungalows

We stayed at this great Hotel in the middle of the jungle and right next to the Maya ruins. It was so beautiful just to look around the grounds. The jungle birds were so noisy that they woke us up at sunrise and kept going all day (sounded like a Tarzan movie). We could see some of the ruins through a door way of the main building. The food was Maya and very good. The staff also gave wonderful service. We were wishing that we had scheduled more time here. The words hot and humid just don't describe the weather!!!

We celebrated with Shelly's entire family for her Mom and Dad's 50 year wedding anniversary. We did a Disney cruise to the Bahama's and Disney's private island. We then went to Disney World for several days. We had a great time!!!!!

NEW OFFICE FOR PREMIER EYECARE

We have out grown our new building that we have been in since Oct 2006. We are moving down the street about 1/4 mile. This building is on Coffee Road, it will be almost twice as big, 6500 square feet. We will have room for 4 Doctors and tripling our Optical displays. We are lucky and blessed to have this successful and growing business. It will be a busy 4 months, we are suppose to move in Jan 1,2009.

After church in Idaho Cynda showed us this street. Over a 1,000 people attended Sacrament meeting with us at 9:00 am. There are two more Sacrament meeting during the day with as many people attending those. Lots of vacationers in Island Park in the summer.

We stopped at this tiny store in the "middle of nowhere". We bought treats and really good looking tee shirts (they have elk and moose heads on them). Even Cynda had to have a Kilgore tee shirt. The Lady who ran this place was married in Bakersfield. We had fun talking with her and hearing her life story.

Yes, a 50 year old man can still ski. I do use the term "ski" very loosely. Ben made me look bad with his ski ability (it would be good to be in my 20's again). It was great fun!!! That is Shelly in the back of the canoe hanging on tightly. Thank you to the Johnson's for a wonderful time.

Yellowstone, Jackson and Island park vacation

We decided to visit Yellowstone and surrounding area after the graduation in Rexburg. Ben (being a local to the area) was our tour guide. We had a great time for the week of sight seeing, hiking and being together.

To be King Louis the XIV. The biggest, most expensive, the grandiest Palace in all of Europe. All of Europe's Royals wanted to be him. On several 1000 acres, with 1000 rooms, it took half of France's gross national product to build. The King's private chapel, reception room, grand ballroom with mirrors and over looking the huge gardens and lawns. View from the gardens in the back and then a picture from the front.

The Louvre Museum (housed in the old King's Palace). The art and other collections are out of this world. Could have spent days or even weeks there.

Sainte - Chapelle where the Royals went to church. All made out of stained glass and built in the 13th century. It was one of the most impressive places I've ever been. The prison where many enemies of the royals were kept and later the prisoners of the revolution (which ironically were the royals, they were kept here before being beheaded). the oldest bridge crossing the Siene, built in the 1600's.

We took a jeep tour to Sintra outside of Lisbon. It was the King's summer palace. Pena Palace was amazing. It looked like a Disneyland inspired place. Next we went to the most western shore in all of Europe.

We had a great time on our trip. the first night we went to Monastery of Jeronimos buitl in the 1500's. Before dinner the Monks who live there sang some songs (chants), it was really cool and Shelly loved it.

The Stake Youngmen hiked Whitney in August and John was invited on the 50 mile backpacking trip. John only made 28 miles of the trip, he had to take an injured hiker out of the wilderness. It was good to be in the outdoors for several days. Unfortuately the body can not take the long hiking abuse any more, way too much pain the last few days.

Our Hotel was amazing. It was right on the beach. Multiple pools and a spa. Shelly spent one morning in the spa (while I was in class) getting a "hot rock therapy" and relaxing. She said she could get use to doing the spa experince on all future vacations.

Shelly and her Sister Kym met in Los Angeles and went to a conference. They had a great time and were able to relax and enjoy themselves. They listen to speakers, heard great music and were recharged. A trip to the New Port Beach Temple was wonderful.
